One of the most controversial speculative fiction writers of the twentieth century, Philip José Farmer (1918-) has to his credit
and amazing body of work. Although best know in recent years for two series, Riverworld and the World of Tiers, he became a force
to be reckoned with in the 1950s, with a number of groundbreaking short stories and novels that maturely explored such heretofore
taboo subjects as religion and sexuality. This preoccupation culminated in the late sixties with a number of adults only novels that
also began an obsession with his first love--the world of pulp fiction. Throughout the 1970s, a fair amount of his work was devoted
to such childhood heroes as Doc Savage and Tarzan, including two "biographies" that explored the "real" lives of these two pulp
archetypes and their blood relationships to other fictional characters. Playful by nature, Farmer has also written under such pen
names as "Kilgore Trout," "John H. Watson," "Jonathan Swift Somers III" and "Cordwainer Bird."
