First published in 1974, this immensely popular series of children's book were named after its first release, Serendipity,
which featured a pink sea monster. (All of the books feature anthropomorphic animals and mythological creatures as the primary
players, although humans do make the occasional appearance.) All of these books were penned by prolific author Stephen Cosgrove
(1945-), and focus on choices made in real-life situations in order to teach children lessons which they would take with them
through life. These morality plays are accompanied by colorful and exquisitely rendered full-page illustrations by Robin James.
Originally self-published by Cosgrove under the Serendipity Press imprint, the catalog was picked up by Penguin Books/Putnam, who
continued to publish new Serendipity titles into the 1980s. Cosgrove is currently re-editing--extensively, in some cases--the
earlier books, which are currently being published by Price/Stern/Sloane. Softcover and hardcover editions exist for all of the
Serendipity titles, with countless printings and alternate cover art.
