FIGURINES & STATUETTES • WALLACE & RUSS BERRIE • M — Z
|
One of the leading producers of novelties since 1963, Russ and Wallace Berrie's line of commemorative figuries was one of their
most popular products produced during the 1960s and 1970s. (Second only to the Troll Dolls, which are still being produced to this
very day.) These hard plastic resin statuettes typically depicted a cartoonish or caricaturistic figure on a base that
bore a salutation or witty saying. Although the most popular were those skewed towards holidays, birthdays and personal
achievements, Berrie & Company also kept their foot in a decidedly more adult market with the production of more risqué
figurines. (Today, these hold the highest demand among collectors, and thus more valuable.) Variants exist for a great many of
these figurines--different colored plastics were used for different pressings, molds were altered or inscriptions changed as time
went on, or a particular model was produced in a variety of different sizes--making it a seemingly impossible task to index the
entirety of their catalogue. Additionally, some were produced with non-resin accoutrements that were attached after-the-fact (and
which, Berrie collectors are aware, are often broken or missing when these figurines do surface). A very popular last-minute gift
in the 1970s, these figurines are now getting fairly hard to come by.
