Australian-born Allan Geoffrey Yates (1923-1985) used numerous nom de plumes throughout his career as a popular writer of detective fiction (including Tex Conrad, Tom Conway, Carlone Farr and Paul Valdez), but he is best known for the series of novels and short stories he penned under the pseudonym of Carter Brown. His distinct brand of hard-boiled crime fiction proved lighter and snappier than similar fare, which proved immensely popular not only in the United States but also abroad, especially Europe. Yates' protagonists include such gumshoes as Larry Baker, Danny Boyd, Rick Holmas, Randy Roberts, Mavis Seidlitz, Boris Slivka, Lt. Al Wheeler and other colorful characters.
