PAPERBACKS • FICTION • SPY & ESPIONAGE • JAMES BOND 007
All entries are listed chronologically:
Created in 1952 by Ian Lancaster Fleming (1908-1964), James Bond--the inscrutible British secret agent with a license to kill,
signified by his "double o" status--survives well past Fleming's original twelve novels and nine short stories. This timeless
character has inspired no less than twenty-one films to date, starring the likes of Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore,
Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and most recently Daniel Craig in the titular role. Following Fleming's initial run of books, the
character was continuously revived by such authors as Kingsley Amis, John Gardner, Raymond Benson, and other, less prolific
writers. James Bond has also been adapted in other mediums--radio, television, comic books, video games, you name it--and has
spawned a vast merchandising empire throughout the years, its peaks usually precipitated by the most current film adaptation. Bond
and his creator were almost single-handedly responsible for the modern espionage novel, which are usually marked by complex plot
twists, high-tech weaponry and surveillance gadgetry, and--last but not least--colorful villains and sexy femme fatales.
