John Norman is the pen name for Dr. John Frederick Lange, Jr. (1931-present), a professor of philosophy who has accrued a cult following, particular in regards to his long running "Gor" series. Also known as "The Chronicles of Counter-Earth," "The Tarl Cabot Saga" and "The Gorean Saga," this series of thirty books produced over the last forty-odd years is as popular as it is controversial. Influenced by the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs (particularly his "John Carter of Mars" series), Gor is known for its rich detail as well as the author's extreme views on evolutionary psychology, which in later books manifests itself as the subjugation of women in sexually explicit detail. (The progressively graphic sexual nature of this ongoing series created tension with some of the previous publishers.) In spite of its notoriety, a Gorean subculture has developed over the years, and the series has inspired two lacklustre, loosely adapted films, Gor (1987) and Outlaw of Gor (1979). Due to the lower print runs of some of the later, less reprinted novels, market values of out of print editions often reflect the limited availability.
