Robert LeRoy Ripley (1893-1949) was a cartoonist, entrepeneur and amateur anthropologist who has secured his place in hisory as the spokesperson for all that is odd, bizarre, and--well--unbelievable. His syndicated newspaper panels featured obscure trivia from around the world, the more incredible, the better. In 1933, he opened The Odditorium, his first museum devoted to the strange; by the end of the 1930s, and least five more followed suit in various major cities across the United States. His cartoon strip and related efforts have since inspired a radio show, several television programs, and countless books in addition to the original series collecting his works.
