Created by Gerry Anderson (1929-present)--the man responsible for such cult "puppetoons" as Fireball XL5 (1962-1963),
Stingray (1964) and Thunderbirds (1965-1966)--Space: 1999 (1975-1977) was his second science fiction
live-action show after UFO (1970-1971), for which it was originally conceived as the third season's story arc. Starring
Martin Landau, Barbara Bain, Barry Morse and Catherine Schell, this program--at the time the most costly ever produced for British
or syndicated television--follows the crew of Moonbase Alpha after the moon is thrown out of Earth's orbit by a catastrophic
explosion. Initially heralded for it's "mature" approach to science fiction, this cult television series retains a loyal fanbase
over thirty years later.
