Created in 1912 by pulp writer Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950), Tarzan the Ape Man, remains the most popular feral child ever conceived by a writer, his adventures having extended into every medium, including radio, film, television, comic books, syndicated newspaper strips, and even video games. This literary character--a British Lord who was raised by a lost race of semi-intelligent apes within the darkest heart of Africa--has become an iconic figure, the embodiment of the purity of primal man, and the antithesis of the hypocrisy of our so-called "civilized" human race.
